Navigating the Challenges and Transformations in Classical Dance

As part of Nirvikalpa’s annual festival, Dakshina (held in collaboration with Bharatakalanjali), a panel discussion took place at the Spastics Society in Taramani on November 17, 2024. The distinguished panel featured Smt. Chitra Visweswaran, Smt.Sailaja, Sri G. Narendra, and Smt. Sreelatha Vinod, with the session expertly moderated by Smt. Roja Kannan. The discussion delved into the evolving dynamics of the classical dance landscape, exploring the intricate balance between tradition and modernity.

The esteemed panelists collectively emphasized the importance of preserving core values while adapting to new circumstances, offering insights into the Guru-Shishya relationship, ethical practices, online learning, and the broader artistic journey. Below is a consensus statement that synthesizes the key points discussed, providing a roadmap for the future of classical dance.

1. The Guru-Shishya Relationship: A Sacred Bond

The Guru-Shishya relationship stands at the heart of Indian classical dance, embodying trust, respect, and mutual growth. The panelists unanimously agreed on the need to uphold the sanctity of this bond, even as the dance world evolves.

● Transparency in Learning Transitions: When students seek to learn from multiple teachers, it is imperative to approach the process with respect. A student should seek their Guru’s permission and blessings before moving to another teacher or style. Such transparency preserves trust and demonstrates ethical conduct.

● Acknowledgment of Lineage: Students must honor their Gurus and acknowledge their contributions. Failing to credit teachers is a breach of ethics and diminishes the spiritual and emotional investment made by the Guru.

2. Online Learning: Bridging Gaps but Losing Depth

The panelists recognized the role of online learning in democratizing access to classical dance education. However, they also highlighted its inherent limitations, particularly in replicating the depth of in-person interactions.

● The Limitations of Virtual Mediums: The inability to observe subtle nuances, such as micro-expressions or the smallest shifts in body language, hampers the holistic understanding of the art form. Classical dance is deeply rooted in physical and emotional precision, which requires one-on-one engagement.

● Purpose-Driven Online Learning: Online platforms are best suited for follow-up sessions or for students who cannot access their teachers in person. However, the students’ focus and discipline are paramount in making such interactions meaningful.

3. Ethics in Teaching and Learning

Ethical practices in the teaching and learning of classical dance emerged as a recurring theme. Both teachers and students bear the responsibility of ensuring that their actions reflect respect and integrity.

● Teacher’s Responsibility: When approached by new students, teachers should confirm that they have the blessings of the previous Guru. This avoids misunderstandings and ensures ethical continuity.

● Student’s Responsibility: Students must maintain open communication with their Gurus and approach transitions with humility. Learning new items or styles from multiple sources without a clear purpose or guidance undermines the Guru￾Shishya tradition.

4. Broadening Artistic Horizons

The panel encouraged dancers to expand their artistic vocabulary by engaging with various art forms, including music, theater, painting, and sculpture.

● Inspiration Beyond Boundaries: Exposure to global traditions and art forms enriches a dancer’s creative expression. Observing and internalizing the nuances of diverse art forms fosters a more profound artistic sensibility.

● Discriminative Observation: While watching performances or exploring new ideas, dancers must exercise discernment. They should absorb elements that resonate with their style and reject those that clash with their artistic identity.

5. Defining Aspirations in Dance

The younger generation of dancers often faces the challenge of juggling multiple roles — performer, teacher, and promoter. The panel underscored the importance of defining clear goals and maintaining focus.

● Specialization Over Generalization: Attempting to excel in multiple areas simultaneously can dilute artistic growth. Dancers must prioritize their passions and develop them with dedication and clarity.

● Balancing Tradition and Modernity: While adapting to contemporary demands, it is essential to stay rooted in the traditional values of classical dance. This balance ensures that the art form remains relevant while preserving its essence.

6. Embracing Collaboration and Dialogue

A recurring theme was the need for open dialogue within the dance community to address challenges collaboratively.

● Healthy Conversations: Discussing difficult topics, such as transitions between Gurus or the ethics of online teaching, fosters understanding and resolves conflicts amicably.

● Future Initiatives: The panel proposed future sessions to delve deeper into unresolved issues, particularly those affecting younger dancers and teachers. Such discussions can pave the way for actionable solutions.

Conclusion: Preserving Values in a Changing Landscape

The panel’s insights reflect a shared commitment to preserving the core values of classical dance while embracing necessary transformations. Upholding the sanctity of the Guru-Shishya relationship, maintaining ethical practices, and fostering a culture of respect and dialogue are critical to navigating the challenges of the modern era. By broadening their horizons and defining their aspirations, dancers can continue to evolve while staying true to the timeless essence of their art.

This consensus serves as a call to action for the classical dance community to reflect, adapt, and uphold the values that make this tradition a beacon of cultural and spiritual enrichment.
