The Guru-Shishya Parampara, a time-honored tradition in Indian classical arts, has been a cornerstone of artisticexcellence for centuries. This deeply personal and transformative relationship between a Guru (teacher) and a Shishya (student) has shaped generations of artists.
The Evolving Landscape
While the core principles of this tradition remain relevant, the contemporary context has necessitated significantadaptations. The following key points emerged from the panel discussion:
The Role of the Guru
● Beyond Technical Mastery: Gurus are increasingly recognized as mentors, and Guru hopping has been the trend but crucial aspects on naatyam is learned under a single Guru for prolonged period of time this will not onlyenhance their technical proficiency but also help in cultivating a strong artistic identity, values, and worldview.
● Adapting to Modern Pedagogy: Gurus are embracing technology to reach a wider audience and provideflexible learning opportunities, while prioritizing in-person
training for nuanced aspects of the art form which goes a long way and is much more important than just online learning, touch feel and sensation can be transferred only in an in-person class.
The Evolving Role of the Shishya
● Diverse Learning Paths: Shishyas are seeking diverse learning experiences, often combining traditional training with exposure to contemporary styles and techniques which dilute the artform and has to be taken care not to call a non-traditional movement a classical/traditional one. As the borders thin out between classical form and contemporary techniques one has to take up responsibility in not calling this the original form of Naatyam on social media.
● Balancing Tradition and Innovation: Shishyas are navigating the delicate balance between preserving the rich heritage of classical dance and developing their unique artistic voice.
● Addressing Economic Realities: Many dancers face economic challenges, making it essential to explorealternative income sources and seek support from the arts community.
The Impact of Technology
● Enhancing Learning: Technology offers new avenues for learning, enabling access to diverse resourcesand global communities.
● Social Media and Self-Promotion: Social media can be a powerful tool for artists to showcase their work, builda following, and attract opportunities but one should not loose out on Riyaz because of content creation. However, it’s crucial to balance online presence with dedicated practice and performance.
The Future of the Guru-Shishya Parampara
To ensure the continued vitality of this tradition, it is essential to:
● Foster a Supportive Learning Environment: Create nurturing spaces where students can learn and growwithout undue pressure.
● Prioritize In-Person Training: Recognize the importance of physical presence for mastering the nuances ofclassical dance.
● Encourage Critical Thinking and Innovation: Encourage students to think critically, experiment, anddevelop their unique artistic voice.
● Address Gender and Socioeconomic Disparities: Create opportunities for female dancers and those frommarginalized backgrounds.
● Advocate for Government Support: Seek government support for the arts, including scholarships, grants, and subsidized performance spaces.
By adapting to the changing times while staying rooted in tradition, the Guru-Shishya Parampara can continue toinspire generations of artists and contribute to the rich tapestry of Indian culture.
